This comprehensive three-volume set marks the publication of the proceedings of the Eighth International Congress of Egyptologists, held in Cairo in 2000. This massive and impressive 1693-page work encompasses the research of over 350 of the world's leading Egyptologists -- writing in English, French, or German -- and contains over 600 illustrations. A dedicated team of editors, proofreaders, and designers worked hard for three years to bring all the disparate elements of this publication -- including photographs, tables, graphs, hieroglyphs, hieratic script, and Greek, Arabic, Coptic, and Hebrew fonts -- together to create a work that is a benchmark in Egyptological publishing. Organized thematically to reflect the breadth and depth of the material presented at the Congress, these papers provide a survey of current Egyptological research at the dawn of the twenty-first century. The proceedings include the eight 'Millennium Debates' led by esteemed Egyptologists, addressing key issues in the field, as well as nearly every paper presented at the Congress. The 248 papers cover the whole spectrum of Egyptological research, and contain many photographs, maps, and plans, that are published here for the first time. Grouped under the themes of archaeology, history, religion, language, conservation, and museology, these contributions together form the most comprehensive picture of Egyptology today. Contributors include: John Baines, Zahi Hawass, Antonio Loprieno, William J. Murnane, Aly Radwan, Donald Redford, Edna Russmann, Helmut Satzinger, Regine Schulz, W. Kelly Simpson, Hourig Sourouzian, Herman te Velde, Kent Weeks.

During a period when the field of literary studies turned away from texts to "theory," Novel Configurations: A Study of French Fiction has become an underground classic. Although it proposes a theory, that theory is inductive and solidly based in real works of fiction. While looking again at significant masterpieces that range from the early nineteenth-to the late twentieth-centuries, from the creations of traditional french writers to that of an Argentine who spent most of his productive life in France. Allan H. Pasco has perceptively indicted new but valid close readings that have revolutionized our view of these works. He suggests that La Chartreuse de Parme is rigorously organized, that Balzac was a narrational minimalists, that Huysmans developed novelistic strategies that would be played out in the Nouvea Roman, that Proust intended good readers to come away from A la recherche du temps perdu with very different but complementary interpretations, that Robbe-Grillet's La Jalousie turns on a plot that seems strange only because it takes place in the mind of the narrator. From these philololgically sophisticated interpretations, Pasco lucidly, elegantly, and wittily points to categories that include all fiction. Concentrating on patterns and description, on the one hand, and external and internal organization, on the other, Novel configurations proposes a new classification that can be easily taught to novices though it will help even professional readers understand the most complex fictional innovations.

Within the cultural and literary context of contemporary Portugal and Western literature, 1998 was unquestionably the year that Portuguese writing gained international recognition as Jos Saramago became the first Portuguese writer ever to receive the Nobel Prize in literature. Readers who had never thought about Portuguese letters began to consume his books and, most importantly, opted for expanding their reading lists to include other important writers not only from Portugal, but from Portuguese-speaking well beyond the borders of Portugal. Global Impact of the Portuguese Language is a collection of Portuguese writing that is as rich in content and broad in scope as the diversity of its topics and writing modes of its contributors. The book is divided into three major parts. Part 1, "Different Cultural Perspectives of Portuguese Writing," contains thirteen chapters in which the first and opening one, "Portugal: The New Frontier" ably sets the stage for the book by examining from a cultural perspective how Portugal, a peripheral country in the new world system, serves as a microcosm of the problems of cultural intercommunication in today's world. Subsequent chapters are grouped in three categories: "The Voices of the Writers," "Critical Approaches to Cames," and "Fictionalizing the Nation." Part 2, "Portuguese Language and Literature Outside Portugal," comprises one section devoted to the Portuguese language in Africa, followed by studies about Portuguese discoveries as part of the historical process of remembering and forging one's identity, and finally a comprehensive historical development of Portuguese writing, both in Portuguese and English, in the United States. Part 3, "Portuguese Literature and Criticism Available in English: Suggested Readings" details the recent literary happenings which point to a possible renaissance in Portuguese literary production. The concluding part of this volume offers a short, comprehensive listing of anthologies, general studies, and the most popular translations of the best of Portuguese writing from Portugal and Africa. This lively volume constitutes a first pioneering effort to contribute to a deepening appreciation and understanding of Portuguese writing. Anyone interested in ethnic writing will find this book an invaluable education resource with which to begin an exploration of Portuguese writing in the United States. Asela Rodriguez de Laguna is associate professor of Spanish and director of the Hispanic Civilization & Language Studies Program. She is the author of Notes on Puerto Rican Literature: Images and Identities: An Introduction, and editor of Images and Identities: The Puerto Rican in Two World Contexts.

The thirteen essays in this volume, based on selected papers given at the Second Annual Conference of the Society of Dix-Neuviemistes (2003), explore the relationships between symbolic, monetary and literary currencies in nineteenth-century France. Essays focus on the sometimes surprising treatment of capitalism and commodity culture in the works of Mallarme, Zola and Huysmans; the transfer and borrowing of economic and literary commodities, names, and concepts in nineteenth-century culture, from Flora Tristan's July Monarchy to Schwob's fin-de-siecle moment; and the interplay between wealth and identity, and commerce and globalisation, in the writings of Hugo, Janin, and Balzac. While it is widely acknowledged that the theme of money is central to nineteenth-century literature, this volume is innovative in tracing the variation, breadth and ubiquity of the idea of currencies in the cultural imaginary of the epoch."
